Pregnancy / Prenatal Care
Prenatal care is offered to Dr. Leslie Korostoff’s pregnant patients throughout fetal development, labor and after baby is born. If you are pregnant or think you could be, please schedule an exam with Dr. Korostoff as soon as possible.
Prenatal care allows Dr. Korostoff and her team to monitor the progress of both mother and child during fetal development. These visits help prevent unnecessary risks and allow Dr. Korostoff to identify any health issues (both mother and baby) present early on. Dr. Korostoff will go over what to expect and how you can provide your unborn child with the best possible start.
All patients will receive a schedule of appointments during pregnancy and after. Dr. Korostoff recommends that most women receive an exam:
• Once a month between 6 weeks and 28 on average, more often as indicated
• Twice a month between 28 and 36
• Every week from 36 weeks to labor and delivery
Women older than age 35 or those who have a high-risk pregnancy will need to see Dr. Korostoff more often to ensure proper development and health of both mother and baby.
During the initial prenatal exam, expect Dr. Korostoff to:
• Inquire about your health and family history, including prior operations, diseases or additional pregnancies.
• Perform a physical assessment with a pelvic exam and possibly a pap smear
• Take blood pressure and measure height and weight
• Acquire a blood and urine sample
• Answer all of your questions
• Obtain an estimate for the due date
Prenatal exams are typically shorter as the end of the pregnancy draws near. Dr. Korostoff will appraise your health and make sure your baby is growing properly.
Most ongoing prenatal exams will include:
• A blood pressure check
• Take weight and measure the abdomen
• Monitor the fetal heart rate
When you're pregnant, you also will undergo routine tests such as blood tests to look for anemia, blood type, HIV testing and more. Depending on your age, personal health, family history, ethnic background, and the test results, additional screenings or assessments may be required.
