Birth Control / Contraception Counseling

Today, there are many birth control options available to suit any age or lifestyle. This includes birth control pills, diaphragms and spermicides, condoms, IUDs and arm implants, as well as permanent solutions like tubal ligation. Some types of birth control require more maintenance from you than other. For instance, birth control pills need to be taken daily and diaphragms need to be inserted shortly before having sex, so these types of birth control options need to become part of your daily routine.

Arm implants and IUDs remain in place at all times and require less maintenance, eliminating the need to “think” about contraception on a daily basis.

The best way to select a birth control method is to schedule an appointment with Dr. Leslie Korostoff. During this visit, you will learn the pros and cons of each option and Dr. Korostoff can help choose which method is best for you. Personal health history and other factors may also play a role in your decision. A consultation with Dr. Korostoff is the best way to determine if there are any birth control methods that could pose a health risk to you.

What is an IUD?

IUD stands for intrauterine device, and is a birth control option that is longer lasting yet still reversible. An IUD is very small, T-shaped and inserted into the uterus through the cervix.

There are two types of IUDs: nonhormonal  and hormonal. A nonhormonal copper IUD works by releasing copper which is an effective spermicide. The hormonal IUD releases hormones, like progestin, which works to thicken cervical mucous to prevent sperm from reaching eggs, as well as keeping the lining of the uterus thin which may help periods be lighter or absent. IUDs are effective2 weeks after insertion as the sole method of birth control  and can remain effective from 3-10 years (depending on the type). They also can also be removed at any time.

How is a Diaphragm Used?

Diaphragms fit snugly over the opening of the uterus (the cervix) to prevent sperm from entering during intercourse. Diaphragms are available in different sizes, and a fitting will need to be performed to ensure the best size is selected for you.

Fittings are performed using the same technique as a pelvic exam, in which we widen the vaginal canal with a lubricated speculum so the cervix can be easily accessed and different sizes can be “tried on.” Diaphragms are used in combination with spermicide to form a more effective barrier.
